A Banner Day for Stillwater Browns
Field Notes · Trip Report
A banner day for stillwater browns
Some mornings the reservoir just hums. We pushed off before sunrise on Tuesday, the surface flat as a mirror, and by the time the first light hit the far ridge the browns were already moving in the shallows. You could see their backs.
We started with a slow-stripped leech pattern in olive, and the second cast came tight to a heavy fish that bulldogged us around the boat for a solid five minutes. A buttery, gold-flanked brown pushing twenty inches. That set the tone for the whole morning.
The takeaway, as always on stillwater, was patience and a steady retrieve. The fish wanted the fly moving slow and low, and the anglers who resisted the urge to speed up got rewarded. We slid every fish back into the cold water and watched them kick away strong.
Days like this are why we do it. If you want to be in the boat the next time the reservoir hums, take a look at our adventures and get in touch.
